The Frankston Station has been re-opened with bold new buildings and upgraded passenger amenities, as a fitting centrepiece for the revitalisation of central Frankston.

The station was officially opened over the weekend, with a smoking ceremony from the Bunurong Land Council, a street party and a light show across the new walls and canopy.

The light and bright design was the result of an international design competition run by the OVGA in partnership with Transport for Victoria in 2016. The Competition Jury, headed by the Government Architect Jill Garner, included a diverse mix of design experts as well as local and state government leaders.

As the flagship project of the Victorian Government’s $63 million investment in the redevelopment of the Frankston Station precinct, the OVGA has been involved in the redevelopment of the area for a number of years. Ahead of the competition the Victorian Design Review Panel provided an independent review of the reference design for the station, to ensure the design aspirations were high and future expansion was well considered.

Throughout the tender and construction phase, the OVGA worked with the delivery agent, the Level Crossing Removal Authority - Northern Alliance to ensure design integrity was protected through the process.

The OVGA’s guide to Architectural Competitions includes a case study of the station competition process, which was notable for opening up eligibility beyond the usual firms typically considered for rail projects. The two-stage process was designed to invite fresh thinking and skill up more design practices at a time when the state is investing heavily in transport infrastructure. You can read more about the design of the competition process in the Guide here External link.

The OVGA continues to work with state and local government to ensure future development across Frankston is delivered with the highest aspirations.
