Universal Design

Michael Walker leads the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in the introduction of Universal Design principles.

He is a strong advocate for embedding the principles of Universal Design in relevant government policy and across projects relating to the built environment.

Michael has provided input into projects which range from sporting pavilions, aquatic centres, to significant state and national level projects such as the State Basketball Centre, Melbourne Park redevelopment and the Melbourne Cricket Ground redevelopment.

Michael ensures that this method of practice is adopted across government and that it is recognised that the creation of social and economic value by connecting people in the built environment is more efficiently and effectively achieved using Universal Design principles.

In addition, Michael has gained a great deal of knowledge and expertise on worldwide trends and thinking within this field through his work across a number of countries. Michael is a triple paralympian, representing Australia in wheelchair basketball.
