The Victorian Design Review Panel (VDRP) has been established to provide independent and authoritative advice to government and statutory decision makers across Victoria about the design of significant government projects.

The Office of the Victorian Government Architect (OVGA) oversees and manages the design review process. The role of the OVGA is to advise government about architecture and urban design and to advocate improving the quality of our built environments in the interests of all Victorians.

The panel is made up of a pool of qualified specialists with a high level of current experience in design and its evaluation, and the skills to appraise proposals objectively. Members of the panel come from a range of disciplines including urban design, architecture, landscape architecture and planning.

How will the panel work?

Design review sessions with the VDRP take place monthly.

A small group (a Session Panel) is drawn from the larger panel pool and convenes to appraise proposals put forward. During the design review session, the Session Panel considers how the buildings or places under review can best meet the needs of people using and affected by them and how the best long-term value might be achieved from public investment.

Ideally, the review occurs early in the design process to offer comment that will lead to the improvement of the proposed development and to provide support for well designed proposals. Some proposals may come back to the Session Panel to be reviewed at different stages of the design process. All advice is captured in a report and provided to the design team for the development.

A range of government construction projects are considered by the OVGA for their potential inclusion in a panel session. The OVGA also assesses the appropriateness of including any non-government proposals brought forward for review by the panel.

Why is it important?

There is mounting evidence that high-quality built environments contribute to quality of life. Providing independent design advice and peer review early in the design stages of a project, can positively influence the quality of design outcomes.

The design review process will strengthen Victoria's capability to implement quality outcomes in the built environment and reinforce Victoria's leadership position in design and the national urban agenda.
